The International Workers’ Day, is a day dedicated to honouring the contributions and achievements of workers around the world.
Brief history of Workers’ Day
Workers’ Day celebrations dates back to the late 19th century when the labour movement fought for better working conditions, fair wages, and the rights of employees.
One of the incidents which culminated in the observance of the day was the Haymarket Protests which took place in Chicago on May 4, 1886. It was a peaceful rally supporting workers on strike for an eight-hour workday. However, the situation escalated and the Police fired into the crowd, leading to the death of seven officers and at least four civilians. The aftermath of the Haymarket affair was significant. Eight anarchist leaders were arrested, and four were executed. This incident sparked international outrage and protests. It also led to the establishment of a day to commemorate the struggles and sacrifices of employees around the world.
In 1889, the International Socialist Conference declared May 1st as International Workers’ Day. This was to honour the Haymarket martyrs and promote solidarity. Since then, annual celebrations have been held around the world with parades, rallies, and demonstrations to advocate for workers’ rights and social justice.
Today, May Day celebrations continue to be an important reminder of the struggles and achievements of the labour movement. It serves as a day to recognize the importance of workers across the world. It also offers a recurring opportunity to reiterate the demand for fair wages, safe working conditions, and workers’ rights. As we commemorate the day, let us remember those who fought for the rights and dignity of workers. Let us also endeavour to join in this struggle more just and equitable society.
