As a consumer, you have certain rights that are protected by law. It is important to know your rights so that you can protect yourself from being exploited by businesses.

Here are some of your rights as a consumer in Nigeria:

  • The right to be informed about products and services.

Businesses must provide you with clear and accurate information about the products and services they sell. This includes information about the price, quality, and features of the product or service.

  • The right to be treated fairly by businesses.

Businesses must treat you fairly and honestly. This means that they must not mislead you, deceive you, or take advantage of you.

  • You have the right to get a refund or replacement if you are not satisfied with a product or service.

If you are not satisfied with a product or service, you have the right to get a refund or replacement.

If you believe that your rights as a consumer have been violated, you can take legal action. You can file a complaint with the Consumer Protection Council (CPC), which is the government agency that is responsible for protecting the rights of consumers in Nigeria.

Here is a case that illustrates the importance of knowing your rights as a consumer:

In the case of Olaniyi v. MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, the CPC held that a business cannot refuse to refund a customer’s money simply because the customer had used the product or service.

In this case, the customer had purchased a data bundle from MTN Nigeria, but the data bundle did not work as advertised. The customer requested a refund, but MTN Nigeria refused to refund the money.

The CPC investigated the complaint and found that MTN Nigeria had violated Mr. Olaniyi’s rights as a consumer. The CPC ordered MTN Nigeria to refund the money to Mr. Olaniyi, and MTN Nigeria appealed the decision to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court upheld the decision of the CPC, and ordered MTN Nigeria to refund the money to Mr. Olaniyi. The Supreme Court found that MTN Nigeria’s refusal to refund the money was unfair, and that MTN Nigeria had violated the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA).

If you are a consumer in Nigeria, it is important to know your rights. By understanding your rights, you can protect yourself from being exploited by businesses.
